23 Best Free Mobile Games in 2026 (Ads, Prices & iPhone Checked)

The best free mobile games in 2026 are Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Pokémon TCG Pocket and Brawl Stars. Shattered Pixel Dungeon has no ads and nothing you have to buy on Android. Pokémon TCG Pocket gives you two free card packs a day. Brawl Stars is the quickest free game to play with friends. On iPhone, Shattered Pixel Dungeon costs $4.99, so start with Pokémon TCG Pocket, Brawl Stars or Vampire Survivors instead.

Almost every game on the store says "Free." Very few are. When we pulled the live US Google Play listings for 82 free games on 29 September 2026, 74 sold in-app purchases, 41 carried ads and only 6 had neither. So this list sorts every pick by how free it really is, and shows the ads flag, the top shop price, the download size and the iPhone price for each one. We re-checked all 23 listings on 3 October 2026.

What "free" really means: the 4 levels

A game that costs $0 can still cost you a lot. Every pick below sits in one of four levels:

• Level 1: Free for real. No ads. Nothing you need to buy. At most, a tip jar.
• Level 2: Free, no ads. No ads flagged on Google Play. There is a shop, but nothing forces you to use it.
• Level 3: Free with ads. Ads pay for the game. You can play all of it, but you will see them.
• Level 4: Free to start, big store. Huge online games with big shops. Fun, but set a budget rule first.

Each game lists the same facts: ads, in-app purchase range, Play rating, download size, whether it needs internet, and what it costs on iPhone. The Android numbers come from the live US Google Play listing, so you can check them yourself.

Level 1: Free for real

These games earn nothing from ads, and most sell nothing at all. If you want zero tricks, start here. Note that three of them are Android-only or paid on iPhone.

1. Mindustry

Build a factory. Feed your turrets. Survive the waves.

The catch: It is a thinking game, not a tap game. Rounds run long. On iPhone it is a one-time $1.99 purchase.

Found a city. Grow an empire. Win the map, one turn at a time.

What free gets you: All of it. The developer promises "no ads, free forever," and the code is open source. It plays like Civilization V.

The catch: Plain graphics, and it is Android-only. iPhone players should look at Polytopia instead.

3. Simon Tatham's Puzzles

About 40 classic logic puzzles in one tiny app. Every grid is new.

What free gets you: Everything. The Play page promises it will "always be free, with no ads, and playable offline."

The catch: No story, no rewards, no fancy art. The Android port has not updated since September 2025, but it still works.

4. Luanti (formerly Minetest)

A free block world. Mine, build and try games made by other players.

What free gets you: A free, open-source engine with no ads and no shop. It was called Minetest until October 2024.

5. Shattered Pixel Dungeon

A new dungeon every run. Die, learn, dive again.

What free gets you: The whole game, with no ads and no timers. Version 4.0 arrived in September 2026 with a new vault quest and new art.

Level 2: Free, no ads

None of these flag ads on Google Play. They earn from optional shops. All five are free on iPhone too.

6. Pokémon TCG Pocket

Open two free card packs a day. Collect Pokémon. Battle friends.

What free gets you: One free pack every 12 hours. Wonder Pick refills every 12 hours too, pack points never expire, and trading opens 14 days after you start.

The catch: Timers. Poké Gold skips them and costs real money, so payers collect faster. Trading also costs shinedust. Save pack points until you are only missing a few cards.

7. Brawl Stars

Three-minute team fights with a huge cast of brawlers.

The catch: Since January 2026 the Brawl Pass costs $8.99 and Brawl Pass Plus $12.99. Skins are looks-only, but paid resources level you faster.

For parents: rated Everyone 10+. Players under 16 get stricter chat filters and no personalized offers, per Supercell's Young Player rules.

8. Clash Royale

The catch: Your King Tower level gates the arenas, and gems can buy missing cards, which is a real head start. Use Training Camp to test decks for free.

9. Old School RuneScape

A giant online world. Train skills, do quests, fight monsters.

These games flag ads on Google Play, so you pay with your attention. The catch line says how much.

The catch: Google Play flags ads; players report they appear as optional buttons for a revive or extra gold. DLC packs cost $0.99 to $3.99. The 1.30 GB download is large for a pixel game.

Level 3. Get it: Vampire Survivors on Google Play.

12. Soul Knight

Shoot through random dungeons with a huge pile of guns.

The catch: Some heroes and skills cost money, and there are random paid items: a skin box (looks only) and a weapon-upgrade chest (helps you win). The developer published the drop rates in May 2026. Use the in-game cloud save; Google Play Games does not back up progress.

13. Alto's Odyssey

Level 4: Free to start, big store

Big online games with big shops. They are free, and many people never pay. Know the rules before you start. All six are free on iPhone too.

The catch: You cannot earn Robux for free; you buy them for avatar items and in-game perks. "Robux generators" are scams, as Roblox itself warns.

For parents: rated Teen. Since 7 January 2026 chat needs a face or ID age check, and Roblox added Kids (5 to 8) and Select (9 to 15) accounts this year. Set a monthly cap under Settings, Parental controls, Spending restrictions, as its spending controls guide explains.

The catch: Outfits and passes cost money. Epic says Fortnite returned to Google Play worldwide on 19 March 2026. Minimum: Android 10 and 4 GB of RAM; Epic recommends Android 14 and 8 GB.

The catch: New cards cost Tokens, and the Season Pass is the only way to get that season's pass card. Its 3.4 Play score is one of the lowest here; reviews cite locked late-game cards and shop prices. It left US stores in January 2025 during the TikTok ban and returned with Second Dinner as publisher.

The catch: New characters and weapons come from Wishes, a gacha (random draw) system, and Original Resin caps daily farming. New characters are power, so paying gives an edge. The 3.3 score partly reflects a 2021 review-bombing campaign. Needs Android 10 and 4 GB of RAM. Gone from Google Play: some lists still recommend games you can no longer download. On 3 October 2026 the Play pages for Rocket League Sideswipe (moved to the Epic Games Store in August 2024), Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (global service ended 30 October 2024), NBA Live Mobile and Disney Mirrorverse (servers closed 16 December 2024) all returned "not found."

How to play free games without paying by accident

1. Read the listing first. On Google Play, look for "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases," and the price range under them.
2. Turn on purchase approval. In Google Play settings, set "Require authentication for purchases" to always. Google explains it in its purchase approval guide. On iPhone, use Ask to Buy or Screen Time.
3. Play for 3 days before paying anything. Ignore day-one starter-pack pop-ups until you know you will stick with the game.
4. Check the odds. In games with random packs, find the published drop rates before you buy.
5. Set a kid limit. Roblox has a monthly spending cap; Fortnite has a purchase PIN.
6. Never use "free currency" generators. Robux and V-Bucks generators are scams.

• On 29 September 2026 we pulled each game's live US Google Play listing: price, ads flag, in-app purchase range, rating and update date. That pull produced the 74 / 41 / 6 figures above. We re-pulled all 23 picks and the games in the "checked" table on 3 October 2026.
• We checked each pick's US App Store listing for iPhone price and availability.
• We read each game's official help pages, patch notes or store text to see what free players get and what costs money.
• Sizes are the largest full download package published for each app, so treat them as a ceiling.
